Join us at the Playhouse and we’ll see if you have what it takes! From there you’ll go to the Finals where our Coaches will provide vocal coaching to help you to the next round. Two of our coaches are Jerrod Godwin and Catherine Kelly.

In addition to singing, she also enjoys playing violin. She has been teaching private violin lessons for the past five years. Future plans include graduate study in vocal performance.

Come and let us hear you ‘sing out’!

Did you know ‘The Voice’ is based on ‘The Voice of Holland’, a reality singing competition? It was initially named ‘The Voice of America’ but the name was shorterned after audition locations were announced. Hosted by Carson Daly and social media correspondent, Alison Haislip, the competition series consists of three phases:

Blind audition- Four judges/coaches, consisting of Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition process. Each judge has the full length of the auditioner’s performance, typically one minute, to make a decision if he or she wants that singer on his or her team. Frequently two or more judges want the same singer and the singer has the final choice of coach.

Battle Phase- Each team of singers is mentored and developed by its respective coach. During this stage the coaches have two of their team members battle against each other directly by singing the same song together, with the coach choosing which team member to advance from each of four individual ‘battles’ into the first live round. The four singers that survive in that first live round compete head to head, with public votes determining one of the two acts from each team that will advance to the final eight, while the coach chooses which of the remaining three acts comprises the other performer remaining on the team.

Live Performance Shows- During this phase the final eight contestants remaining compete against each other in live broadcasts. The television audience and the coaches have equal say 50/50 in deciding who moves on to the final four phase. With one team member remaining for each coach, the final four contestants compete against each other in the finale with the outcome decided solely by public vote.

‘Voice’ winner Javier Colon received $100,000 and a recording contract with Universal Republic!

‘Lillington’s Voice’ is based loosely off ‘The Voice’. The first round Blind Auditions has ocurred and if you were selected you’re secured a spot. Once the second round of Blind Auditions is complete you will move into the final round where our Coaches will provide vocal coaching and tips to each performer. Performers will then ‘sing out’ where the audience will have a vote on who should be ‘Lillington’s Voice’!

Ever wonder if you could be the next Neil Simon, Arthur Miller or Tennessee Williams? Find out when you enter HOHPs playwriting contest. It’s open to all elementary and high school aged youth to promote the work of budding artists.

Rules and guidelines will be posted on our website shortly. The winner will receive a monetary prize as well as have their play produced on the HOHP stage! We’ll see you at the theatre!

Before writing your play you are encouraged to read the Playwriting Tips and Resources. 10 Things to Keep in Mind:

Character speech should be interesting, not everyday ordinary speech. Make sure each character has a distinct voice – you should be able to “hear” each character.

Your characters all need interesting actions: plays are about action, not people standing around talking. But action does not automatically mean violence. Trying to get a date, borrowing money, begging for forgiveness – these are all possible “actions” that a character might do and could be quite interesting to watch.

There must be growth in your characters over the course of the play. What have they learned? How have they changed? How has the plot affected them?

Your play needs a conflict. Is there a compelling problem?

Every single scene should add new information about the plot or characters, and each scene should build on the one that came before.

Keep ahead of the readers. Don’t let them figure out your ending before you get there.

If the reader/audience can infer it, don’t say it.

Give yourself enough time to write the play. Many plays end too quickly because the author ran out of time.

Never use a stage direction when you should have a scene – your story needs to be told through the events and actions of the scenes.

Be original. Don’t do something you’ve already seen on TV or in movies.
